Feel the spooky atmosphere at this former penal colony set in landscaped grounds, and hear tales from the site’s convict days as you tour the evocative ruins, which include the guard tower, church and main penitentiary. You will need three hours at the site.

You’ll be driving a good part of The Great Eastern Drive, which stretches between Orford and St Helens, so have your camera at the ready.

Icy streams cascading out of rugged mountains, stands of ancient pines mirrored in the still waters of glacial lakes and a wealth of wildlife ensure there is always something to captivate you.
