Sri Lanka is arguably one of the best places in the world to sight blue whales and sperm whales because the continental shelf is close to the surface of the water. This means that you are also most likely to sight these great creatures.
At the airport you will be greeted by your chauffeur guide who will take you to your residence for the next five nights. Relish the journey as you drive just by the natural turquoise waves, pass villages as local go about their day lives and more. Once at the comforts of your hotel, relax and recover from any jet lag.
One of Sri Lanka’s finest secrets is that the town of Mirissa, only an hour’s drive one-way, is one of the world’s best locations for watching blue and sperm whales as well as pods of dolphins.
This is because the continental shelf is closer to surface at this point and hence, it is more likely to sight the world’s largest animal in nature. Set off early morning on your expedition accompanied by the local naturalist guide – Anoma. Don’t forget your camera to catch their tails flip. After an exciting experience return to the hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure
As in nature sightings cannot be guaranteed – head out another day with Anoma to spot more spinner dolphin, blue whales or sperm whales. As you set off on the boat cruise listen out to the cacophony of tunes created by spinner dolphins, travelling in pods. In deeper waters you will spot the blue whales travelling in groups. As you venture further out are the sperm whales that travel in solitude with a few others. This makes Sri Lanka arguably the best place in the world to sight both blue and sperm whales together.
In the evening, take a serene ten minute boat ride down the Kepu Ela, a short waterway. Find yourself so near yet so far away from the hotel at a quiet little village patch off the river. This is where the boutique hotel Kurulubeddda is situated. You will be introduced to the property including a sprawling lawn for relaxation and lazing. Following which enjoy a private dinner at the pavilion overlooking the paddy field and marshes. Return by boat to Jetwing Lighthouse.
Curiously explore the local wonders of the UNESCO World Heritage 17th century Dutch fort. In this maze of cobbled pathways lined by petit town houses, you will get lost, but that is the very intension. To soothe your mind, body and soul we invite you to Lighthouse’s Spa for one of their signature treatments. This head to toe therapy will ease all tensions.
Spend another day with the majestic blue and sperm whales as they pass the south coast of Sri Lanka on their voyage to the Bay of Bengal from the Arabian Ocean. You will find that fellow travellers also come to Sri Lanka to experience dolphins and whales because the strike rate of the sightings is relatively high. This means that you are likely to see not just one whale, but many groups during the season. After your expedition, return to the hotel and relax. Savour a final dinner privately on the deck of the hotel overlooking the roaring Indian Ocean.
As all good things must come to an end, your chauffeur guide with comfortable take you back to the international airport for a safe return journey
