Overview

Established in the 1950s, the immense Serengeti National Park is home to the great Wildebeest migration and large numbers of other wildlife that roam the 14,763 sq km of the reserve. Many cross the marshy western corridor’s crocodile-infested Grumeti river. Whilst Black rhinos inhabit the granite outcrops of the Moru kopjes.

It is partly adjacent to the Kenya border and is northwest of the adjoining Ngorongoro Conservation Area.It is best known for its huge herds of pains animals especially gazelles and zebras.

The Serengeti is one of the most famous national parks in Africa and offers some of the best wildlife viewing in the world, the Serengeti has earned the titles of one of the “seven natural wonders of Africa” and one of the “Ten natural wonders of the world”.

From the wildlife filled savannah of the Seronera Valley in the centre of the park, dubbed “the land of endless plains”, to the forests and bush that line the Grumeti River, to the Lobo area, that borders Kenya’s Masai Mara, this park is home to one of the oldest known ecosystems on our planet. Evidence of early man has even been found in Olduvai Gorge, dating back two million years.

Aside from the migration populations, the reserve is home to an impressive array of other wildlife and birdlife, including strongholds of cheetah and lion in the plains.

Twice a year the Serengeti is home to arguably the largest wildlife migration on earth, where over a million wildebeest and some 200,000 zebras move from the hills to the plains in the south and onwards from there.
